“Dan York has been president of the LPI (Linux Professional
Institute) since its inception in 1998. We asked him a few
questions concerning the LPI certification and Linux, and what the
future holds for both of them.”
“Why is Linux training and certification important for
business?”
“Well, first off, you really bring up two separate issues –
“training”, and then “certification”. I separate them because I
think it is a key distinction between LPI’s certification program
and those offered by other vendors. Unlike the other major Linux
certification programs, our only purpose is to set standards for
certification. We do not at all specify the *education* that you
need to prepare for our exams. If you want to just read the
objectives and study on your system, fine. If you want to take a
training class, fine. Read a book? Take an online web class?
Whatever route you want to take is fine with us. We do not
approve/endorse/authorise *any* particular training
methods….”
“What, if any, are the advantages of taking distribution
independent LPI training and certification over distribution
specific courses (e.g. RHCE)?”
“Two answers – first, why LPI’s cert versus more
distribution-specific certs. Well, if you are looking to
demonstrate your capabilities working with *Linux* – and really for
most flavours of Linux – then you need to pursue a distro-neutral
cert like LPI. It provides a broad general benchmark of your
understanding of Linux. Now, I think it might make sense after you
have the LPI cert to also go on to pursue distribution-specific
certification – if that is the distro you will be working with. But
I would suggest LPI as the first step….”
