Stores Online: Linux, Linux Everywhere

“For Harry Roberts, the decision to deploy his company’s
critical applications on the open source Linux operating system was
anything but an impulsive leap. Instead, the CIO of Boscov’s
Department Stores took a calculated approach.

“Roberts started small, using Linux for non-critical
applications like the file and print server. Later, it was loaded
on servers handling communications and network management. When the
time came to test a mission critical application on Linux, Roberts
chose one of the most complicated–an invoice processing
application that links to the mainframe, requires on-line
functionality and needs to interface with PeopleSoft
financials.

“‘It took us two weeks to port it to the Linux server, and even
then, we ran a parallel application for nearly four months so that
we could address any hiccups. But since we went live with Linux
this spring, we’ve not had a single failure,’ says Roberts, who is
in the process of moving the retailer’s e-commerce applications to
Linux…”
