Sydney Morning Herald: Open Source Gets a Hearing in Canberra

“The benefits and challenges of using Open Source software in
Australian government agencies were explored in depth at a seminar
organised by the National Office for the Information Economy in
Canberra yesterday.

“Speakers at the seminar included representatives from IBM, the
research firm Gartner, the Australian Unix Users Group, the
Department of Veterans’ Affairs, the Bureau of Meteorology, and
Microsoft. Around 150 delegates attended, 100 from the public
sector and the others representing vendors.

“AUUG treasurer Gordon Hubbard said he had provided an
Australian perspective on how Open Source software could fit into
government agencies. ‘The general benefits in terms of costs,
robustness and control were explained,’ Hubbard said. The
