“In April, Novell announced its intent to embrace Linux, and it
made good on the promise just days ago. In introducing Nterprise, a
suite of basic NetWare services that includes file, print,
messaging, and management services, Novell showed it’s into open
source. And it signed up IBM, HP, and Dell as distributors of the
new networking services software. If you can’t beat ’em, join
’em.“Unfortunately, Novell’s leap into Linux comes at a time when
the future of the OS (not to mention the profitability of companies
banking on it) is muddied by threats and lawsuits from SCO, which
claims it owns the rights. But Novell is forging ahead. It has to.
As Gartner analyst John Enck puts it: “If everyone was waiting for
the SCO thing to be over, they would be waiting a couple of years.
Companies aren’t going to wait on the sidelines…”
