Dell, Gateway, Intel, and Compaq — industry powerhouses
that once courted Microsoft and its Windows operating system — are
turning toward Linux in a flirtation that has escalated into a
full-fledged affair.

“With each passing week, these former Microsoft (stock: MSFT)
diehards are forging stronger links with Linux, announcing
partnerships and technologies to woo the open source operating
system and the companies that back it.”

“Microsoft has consistently worked with Intel’s competitors and,
in a sense, this is just Intel doing the same thing,” said Linley
Gwennap, former editor of the Microprocessor Report and now an
independent analyst at Linleygroup.com. “Intel is looking to
support other operating systems and Microsoft is looking to support
other processors.”
