“Corel’s attention span was fitting for an MTV generation.
Attempts to become a maker of low-cost network computers, then a
champion for the Java programming language and more recently, a
pioneer in the creation of consumer-based Linux products, all led
to losses and dead ends.

“Corel’s missteps peaked with the failed acquisition of
Inprise/Borland Corp. in May, 2000, further complicated by
Cowpland’s controversial stock trading, which sparked an
investigation by the Ontario Securities Commission.

“Burney, 39, took over as head of Corel when Cowpland decided to
jump ship later that year. Since then, the young
executive–recently named one of Canada’s top 40 under 40–has
stopped the bleeding and brought stability to the company’s balance
sheet and employee base…”
