theOpenEnterprise: Open Source: Enterprise Ready — With Qualifiers

“This much we can say for sure: The Open Enterprise–the
corporate IT organization using open-source and standards-based
software to meet today’s business requirements–is alive, it’s well
and it’s plotting ways to further leverage open software.

“But the reality of the much-hyped open source movement comes up
a bit short of an unqualified endorsement from IT executives in big
companies. Many aren’t throwing open the floodgates to open source
and standards–at least not yet–due to lingering fears about
issues including support, security, and the plain-old need to hold
someone responsible if software breaks down. Still, they are
extremely upbeat about the cost benefits of open source. So much so
that about two-thirds are using open source operating systems
today, while nearly 60 percent are using open source Web servers,
according to an exclusive survey of 260 IT and corporate execs who
have IT department oversight…”
