“The performance of your network can have a significant impact
on the general performance and reliability of the rest of your
environment. If different applications and services are waiting for
data over the network, or your clients are having trouble
connecting or receiving the information, then you need to address
these issues.

“In general, network performance issues are often tied to the
underlying hardware; you cannot exceed the physical limits of the
network environment. All performance issues are also usually
relevant to a specific protocol or system, such as NFS or Web
access. But you can diagnose and identify the issues from within
the operating system so that you can determine the correct course
of action.”
