“The Santa Cruz Operation (SCO) Inc. last week announced the
expansion of its product line to compete with Microsoft Corp.’s
Small Business Server (SBS). Executives at the company are touting
the new line as ‘the most advanced operating system on Intel
processors.’ SCO’s UnixWare 7 Release 7.1 Business Edition is
targeted for the small to midsize business (SMB) market.”

“The Business Edition includes Webtop, a browser interface based
on SCO’s Tarantella technology. Webtop enables server-based
applications and server administration functions to be accessed
securely from any Java-enabled browser for local or remote
administration. The operating system, which is expected to ship
later this month, offers 4 GB of RAM and is bundled with Netscape
Communicator 4.0. The platform provides file and printer sharing
for Unix, Novell and Windows clients through its bundled
SCOVisionFS server and NetWare Unix client. Additionally, the
product supports previous releases of UnixWare 7, SCO UnixWare 2.x
and SCO OpenServer applications, as well as Linux apps.”
