VARBusiness: Sun Acquires Java/Linux IDE Vendor [NetBeans]

“Sun Microsystems Inc. Wednesday acquired a Java-based
independent development environment (IDE) vendor. Czech
Republic-based NetBeans Ceska republika a.s. is best known for its
Java IDE for Linux developers, said its founder Roman Stanek, and
Sun has posted a free version of NetBeans Java IDE for developers
working on Linux, Solaris or Windows platforms.”

“The company will combine NetBeans IDE products with products
from its acquisition of Forte Software Inc., Oakland, Calif., which
also was completed Wednesday.”

“Sun plans to tightly integrate the Forte SynerJ and
NetBeans product lines into a portfolio of Java technology IDE
products
that will include a Community Edition for business
developers and individuals just starting to try their hand at
writing Java technology-based applications. It is expected to be
available for free download later this year for Solaris, Linux
and Windows
environments.”

“…an Internet Edition for developers creating business
applications for small companies that are deployed on a single Web
server is expected to be available in the first quarter of 2000,
while an Enterprise Edition for corporate developers based on the
Forte SynerJ IDE and is available now.”
