“One of the biggest fear factors that companies have
with their computing systems is that things can go bang. Not bang
in the literal sense although that does happen. I have literally
had power supplies and CRT monitors (remember them?) go bang, very
loudly, and lose their magical pixie dust. The context of things
going bang is when the operating system or programs you are using
decide show their inbuilt creepy crawlies and bug you with
problems.

“This prompts the who you gunna call question from higher ups.
As the ghost busters are in the movies and we are dealing with an
operating system, not a giant marshmallow man, it makes sense to
call the gatekeepers of the operating system. I don’t have
Sigourney Weavers phone number and I think that operating systems
are not her realm of interest. Besides, she would probably tell me
to go and fsck myself as well as set her scary multi-toothed pet on
me if I tried to call her.

“The users and purchasers of microsoft systems are secure in
themselves that they have a company behind them to point the bone
at when things go wrong.”
