“Martin Roesch spent one weekend in 1998 playing around with
designs for a network security program. Roesch eventually released
his ‘little program’ as an open-source product that could be used
by anyone with the technical prowess to access the software.“Over the next few years, Roesch’s program, called Snort, was
refined and expanded as others offered feedback. Snort grew in
popularity, but it was still just a hobby for Roesch until he left
a start-up firm in late 2000 and was forced to think about making a
