Wired: Napster Ordered to Shut Down

“Napster, the controversial file-sharing service that has been
the scourge of the music industry since it was launched late last
year, has been ordered shut down.”

“In a scathing decision Wednesday afternoon, Judge Marilyn Patel
of the Northern California Federal District Court, ruled to grant
the recording industry a temporary injunction to shut down the
service, effective immediately.”

“In a lengthy statemenet, the judge said the recording industry
had shown the likelihood to win a trial, while the defendants had
failed to prove it had substantial non-infriging uses.”

She even cited Napster executives for downloading
copyrighted music onto their hard drives.

“The signficant use of this service is obviously trading
copyrighted material without obtaining copyright holders’
permission,” she said.”
