“A host of vendors have announced tools and products designed to
make Linux a safe choice for businesses, indicating that the
operating system is maturing rapidly
Trillian, the multi-vendor 64bit Linux for Intel’s upcoming
Itanium processor, announced availability of the source code for
the new operating system… Such availability of an operating
system for a new processor architecture before the release of the
processor itself is unprecedented.
IBM said its journaled file system would be released in open
source form and the company will dedicate engineers to maintain the
code. The file system joins a crowded field of rivals that includes
the new ext3 file system and SGI’s XFS file system. Journaled
file systems allow an operating system to reboot much faster than
one that lacks the feature such as Windows 2000.”
