“SGI, the troubled maker of servers and workstations, is to sell
some of its assets and focus on its more profitable businesses.
Though SGI did not say which assets it will dispose of,
analysts predicted that the low-end Windows NT and Linux
workstation businesses are likely candidates.”
“Fichera said that the low-end workstation product lines, using
Intel processors, were most likely to be disposed of. “SGI’s Linux
and Windows NT plans are poorly thought out,” he commented. “It
will face intense, better-funded competition and will not be able
to sustain any advantage in those markets. SGI’s strategy of
giving away its operating system crown jewels to the open source
community is a big risk and its NT strategy has never
worked.”
