“Linux is uniquely suited to playing MP3s, given its lack of
overhead; it is easily possible to play them, with tweaking, on 486
computers, despite the intense computational decoding requirements
that MP3 audio requires (though obviously you can’t do much else
while the MP3 is playing). Here I will discuss how to play MP3s,
and step through the simple process of creating them from the
tracks off a CD.”

“Several open source MP3 players exist, as console or X
applications. These include mpg123, FreeAmp, MP3blaster and more
obscure offerings, but since I use mpg123, we’ll focus on
that.”

“You are also capable, with most MP3 players, of reading the MP3
over an ftp or http connection. There is at least one GPL MP3
broadcasting program, iceCast, dedicated to that purpose.”
