Are donations effective for open source projects?

Eran Galperin, CTO and co-founder of Binpress, argues that successful open source projects need committed developers more than they need money. “‘Submit a patch’ is a common response when you open a ticket that is not interesting or urgent for the project maintainer,” says Galperin. “It’s never ‘Send a donation.’ Because donations can’t buy dev time.”
