“Now I’m a relative newcomer to the linux movement – Coming from
a strong Windows/DOS background, I found myself quickly at home
with the popular free operating system – and could you imagine my
joy when I found Freeciv, a Civilization clone not just for linux,
but for many popular OS’s. As many may already know, gaming on
Linux is certainly not a strong point, but I am happy to say, this
situation is heading towards a turn.”

“Freeciv has been built from the ground up, and fits nicely into
the X environment. It is graphically better than the original, with
shades of both Civ and Civ II clearly seen within the “top-down”
view of the original, and enhanced, smoother textures of Civ II
(the most obvious being the units/cities images). Freeciv is
certainly far nicer to look at compared to the original, released
back in the early ’90s – and this is to be expected. However lets
get one thing straight – its not the graphical content which makes
Freeciv a great game – on the contrary. It is the addictive
gameplay wielded from the success of Civ that is where the title
excels.”
