In the following blog post we are going through the steps of installing and configuring a Master DNS (BIND/NAMED) server on a CentOS 7 Linux VPS.

WHAT IS A DNS SERVER?
A master or primary DNS server is a DNS server that can provide zone transfers to other DNS servers. A DNS server in general is the Internet’s equivalent of a phone book. It maintains a directory/record of domain names and translate them to Internet Protocol (IP) Addresses.

This is necessary because, although domain names are easy for people to remember, computers or machines, access websites based on IP addresses.

WHAT IS A BIND/NAMED?
It is the most widely used Domain Name System (DNS) software on the Internet. On Unix-like operating systems it is the de facto standard program used for DNS.
