InfoWorld: Group forms to develop universal print driver

A group of leading printer manufacturers is working to create a
single universal print driver that will replace the more than 3,000
currently required drivers.

The goal is to require only one driver in the operating system,
or a Universal Printer Driver Format (UPDF), with the
characteristics of each particular printer described in a text file
in the printer itself.

The universal driver will require the support of operating
system vendors.
