Jon “maddog” Hall will be the featured speaker at the DFW Unix
User’s Group’s Thursday, May 6 meeting. Jon is a tireless and
entertaining promoter of the Linux operating system. The meeting
will be at 7:00 PM at the Crown Plaza Suites, at Coit and LBJ
Freeway. The meeting is free and open to the public, and everyone

Jon has been in Compaq’s UNIX Group for over 14 years as an
engineer, product manager, and marketing manager. Prior to Compaq,
Jon was a Senior Systems Administrator in Bell Laboratories’ UNIX
Group. maddog has been programming and using UNIX for over 18
years. In addition to Jon’s work with Compaq UNIX, he is also
Executive Director of Linux International, a non-profit
organization dedicated to promoting the use of Linux. Digital
Equipment Corporation was the first system vendor to join Linux
International, as a Corporate Sponsoring Member. Jon has been
directly responsible for the porting of Linux to the Alpha
chip.
maddog started his programming career on large IBM mainframes in
Basic Assembly Language but his career improved dramatically when
he was introduced to Digital’s PDP-11 line of computers, when he
was Chairman of the Computer Sciences Department at Hartford
Technical College. He spent four glorious years there teaching
students the value of designing good algorithms, writing good code,
and living a honorable life. He has also been known to enjoy
discussing aspects of computer science over pizza and beer with
said students.
Jon will deliver the General Session speech at the Linux Global
Summit, a part of Spring Comdex, on April 19, 1999. He write
articles for numerous computing magazines.
The
Crown Plaza Suites is just west of the northwest corner of the
intersection of Coit Road and the LBJ Freeway (Interstate Highway
635). The hotel has entrances on the LBJ service road and on Alpha
Road just to the north. There is also an entrance at the west side
off Blossomheath Lane.
