“This case always had far less to do with the public interest
than with the greed of rivals at Netscape, America Online, Sun
Microsystems and other companies that were instrumental in building
the legal argument against Microsoft advanced by the Justice
Department and 19 state attorneys general.”

“In a startling abandonment of its regulatory obligations, the
Federal Communications Commission has not seriously questioned the
AOL takeover of Time Warner, which leaves the company in a dominant
position to merge the Internet with the major producer of old media
content. Never has one company had so much power to control the
flow of news and entertainment in the market, a threat to free
expression that is far more serious than any posed by
Microsoft.”

“Why single out Microsoft? Are we less free because we write
on Microsoft Word, prefer Windows to Linux or use the company’s
Internet Explorer? The public doesn’t think so; the latest Gallup
poll shows Bill Gates with a 69% favorable rating, and a strong
majority oppose breaking up his company.”
