Linux Mint 18.2 “Sonya” Beta gives users the possibility to test drive the Cinnamon and MATE editions of the upcoming operating system, which is now based on the Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS (Xenial Xerus) distro, but using the Linux 4.8 kernel packages from Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak). This means it will be supported until 2021. As expected, the Cinnamon edition of Linux Mint 18.2 “Sonya” features the recently released Cinnamon 3.4 desktop environment, which brings major improvements to the handling of desktop icons. The Cinnamon Spices website was also revamped to let you add desklets, themes, applets, and extensions to your Cinnamon desktop.
