“Most Americans hold a certain amount of reverance for Consumer
Reports magazine, or at least I think they do. As stated in the
preface to the 1999 Home Computer Buying Guide, “CR is a
comprehensive source of unbiased advice about products and
services, personal finance, health and nutrition, and other
consumer concerns. Since 1936, our mission has been to test
products, inform the public, and protect consumers.”
“Yesterday, I found myself browsing the magazine section of a
neighborhood grocery store, waiting out the rain, looking for
nothing in particular. I came across the ’99 computer guide, opened
it to the index, and looked for Linux. Nothing!”
“And what exactly is an operating system? According to Consumer
Reports, “Windows 98, which comes installed in most computers
intended for home use, is known as the computer’s operating system
(OS).”
