LinuxPower: Interview of the XMMS Staff

“We recently had the chance to ask a few questions of the main
members of the xmms team, Peter, Olle, and Thomas. They were kind
enough to answer, and here’s what they had to say…”

“Jeremy: The backend mp3 decoding engine of xmms is based on
mpg123; what caused you to go this route rather than a) developing
your own decoding engine or b) using another backend such as amp or
freeamp?”

“It takes a lot of time to write your own decoding engine (ask
winamp crew about Nitrane :)). AMP is not GPL and have it’s own
license, freeamp was not good enough at the moment. Anyone can make
an input plugin of these decoders if they like and use that. Or
write their own decoder as well if they like.”
