When I first started using Linux it bothered me that I was
unable to type special characters such as ë, ê, ö
and ô. These characters are frequently used in non-English
languages like Afrikaans, German and other European
languages.

Before I knew about Linux and used Windows, I could create any
character by holding down the “alt” key and punching in the Ascii
code. This worked most of the time, but a lot of the time I had to
look up the code for ô because I didn’t use it enough to
remember it. When I was in a hurry, I simply typed the word without
it, resulting in “more” instead of “môre” (morning in
english). But then I discovered an easy way to do this in
Linux.
