“David Theroux, founder and president of The Independent
Institute, now finds himself wallowing in the fetid waters of
deceit. Splashed across the September 18, 1999 front page of
Silicon Valley’s primary newspaper, the San Jose Mercury News, was
a revelation. Contrary to the institute’s previous assertions,
full-page newspaper ads placed by it in support of Microsoft’s
position in the current antitrust trial were funded by
Microsoft.”

“The ads were letters sympathetic to Microsoft’s position and
signed by 240 academic experts. These ads were published in the New
York Times and the Washington Post in June 1999.”
