Reuters: Expert At Microsoft Trial Argues OS Definition

“David Farber, a University of Pennsylvania professor, said the
operating system performs basic system functions such as
coordinating memory, disk drives, keyboard, and monitor, a much
narrower definition than that used by Microsoft. The definition is
crucial to the case.”

“‘You’re dealing with marketing terms as opposed to technical
terms,’ he said.”

“Farber said the card game Solitaire came with Microsoft’s Win
98 package, but ‘no one considers that part of the operating
system.'”

The trial is in its eighth week, and over half of the witnesses
have testified.
