“Sun Microsystems Tuesday announced an early-access version of
Solaris 8 and said it will ship the operating system next February,
around the time that Microsoft will ship Windows 2000.”

Sun officials are hoping to attract Linux and Windows NT
users to Solaris 8, the early-access version of which is available
on its Web site for $19.99, plus shipping and handling. The cost
covers materials and documentation.

“Sun is offering limited support for the beta, but will allow
anyone to download it. It is also taking feedback from users, but
said it closed the features list last summer.”
