This howto will explore the capabilities and limitations of
two gui news clients: Knews and Xemacs.
First off, I shall
give very detailed instructions for compiling and using knews, then
move on to the configuration of Xemacs as a news client. Even
though these programs leave much to be desired and are, to be
rather blunt, flatly deficient as full featured news clients, they
do suffice in the retrieval and displaying of text and the
retrieval and decoding of binary news articles….”

“Knews and Xemacs are gui news clients which posses certain
benefits, and at the same time, decided drawbacks. The text
features of knews are noteworthy, yet the inline image viewer is
rather unreliable. Xemacs does not handle image viewing inline,
however with the ~/.mailcap file configured properly, Xemacs is
remarkably efficient. Approach knews as a reader for text based
news groups, and Xemacs as client for executing binaries culled
from news groups. They are both, unmistakeably, works in
progress.”
