UNIX and LINUX Computing Journal: User Management Tools

[ Thanks to Jay Fink
for this link. ]

“If you maintain a UNIXish system of any sort, you will
invariably have to add and/or delete user accounts, even if you
have a home system. In extremely large organizations, you may
employ tools such as NIS+ for network based user management,
however, in smaller scale systems, accounts are most likely
controlled at each system.”

“This column will take a look at single account management from
the command line using inherent tools to most UNIX Operating
Systems. First a general overview of the tools followed by an
example of adding, modifying then removing a pretend user. This
column will not cover group management. That will be addressed in a
later column.”

There are many user management tools available both in GUI
and TUI form available, it is my feeling (and preference) that the
command line tools provided are much more terse and succinct in
comparison.
