According to Mr. Exton, the custom kernel compiled by hand is based on the upstream Linux kernel 4.2.2, the latest and most advanced kernel branch available at the moment of writing this article. Kernel 4.2.2-x86_64-exton was optimized only for 64-bit (x86_64) hardware architectures and offers extra support for new and modern hardware components.
