“To really get the most from a 64-bit architecture, you need a
64-bit operating system. And today, and into 1999, that usually
means Digital Unix.”

“Solaris 7.0. It will run on the Ultrasparc series and, like
Digital Unix, will be ported to Merced as soon as possible.”

No mention of Linux.

Editor’s note: responding to reader complaints, the story
has been updated to include the following about Linux:

“64-bit Linux is also now available on Alpha in a pretty mature
version. There’s also a less stable Linux running on Sparc
systems.”

Thanks to Codifex Maximus for this
update.
