CentOS/RHEL Developers work hard to provide an enterprise level of support. Unfortunately this leads to very dated packages. These dates packages can be a blocker on compiling some of the more bleeding edge software. This method of upgrading GCC provides a side by side install to avoid complicating or breaking your install. It also provides a method of swapping back and forth between the stock version and upgraded version.
