“Back in the 1980’s, email systems were siloed across service
providers and were not connected to the Internet. Cerf was working
for MCI in the late 1980’s working on MCI’s email system. Actually
getting connected to the Internet was a process which at the time
required permission from U.S. authorities.“In 1988, we got permission to connect MCI mail to the
Internet,” Cerf said. “That broke the policy log jam.”
