Three new Internet appliances — in varying degrees of
usefulness — run on Linux using open source browser engine
Gecko.

“As if America Online were not pervasive enough, it today
announced a new line of Linux-based Internet appliances developed
in conjunction with Gateway and tailored for use throughout the
home.”

“The future of Internet appliances is as yet unwritten, but AOL
and Gateway are betting that consumers will want to access the Web
not just from their computers, but from countertop appliances and
wireless Web pads that work remotely within a home. Gateway
president and CEO Jeffrey Weitzen said in a written statement, “For
many consumers, the Internet is becoming an essential part of their
lives, carrying the same importance as the telephone, radio,
newspaper, magazine, and TV….”
