ZDNet: Good Enough?

“You know times are weird when people line up to sneak into
Albania. Or when the government says they’re saving refugees by
spending billions to bomb them. Or, closer to home, when people
besides Mac loonies and Larry Ellison actually start thinking about
a world without Microsoft. The drumbeat for this is getting louder.
And it actually might just change the way we work and buy
everything.”

“Stop. Hold on. Don’t go. This isn’t a story about Linux,
although Microsoft is so spooked about it that they may release
some precious source code (ordinarily locked away tighter than the
recipe for Coke). But folks, Linux is essentially Unix. Not exactly
a great leap forward.”

“The problem is that we’re all sated–or maybe stupefied is a
better description. Everything is, well, good enough. New releases
just glop on more icing. There are few compelling reasons to
upgrade.”
