Package : curl
Vulnerability : buffer overflow
Problem type : local (remote)
Debian-specific: no
CVE ID : CVE-2005-4077 CVE-2005-3185
BugTraq ID : 15756 15102 15647 Debian Bug : 342339 342696

Several problems were discovered in libcurl, a multi-protocol
file transfer library. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures
project identifies the following problems:

CVE-2005-3185

A vulnerability has been discovered a buffer overflow in libcurl
that could allow the execution of arbitrary code.

CVE-2005-4077

Stefan Esser discovered several off-by-one errors that allows
local users to trigger a buffer overflow and cause a denial of
service or bypass PHP security restrictions via certain URLs.

For the old stable distribution (woody) these problems have been
fixed in version 7.9.5-1woody1.

For the stable distribution (sarge) these problems have been
fixed in version 7.13.2-2sarge4. This update also includes a bugfix
against data corruption.

For the unstable distribution (sid) these problems have been
fixed in version 7.15.1-1.

We recommend that you upgrade your libcurl packages.

Gentoo Linux

Gentoo Linux Security Advisory GLSA 200512-03

http://security.gentoo.org/

Severity: Normal
Title: phpMyAdmin: Multiple vulnerabilities
Date: December 11, 2005
Bugs: #114662
ID: 200512-03

Synopsis

Multiple flaws in phpMyAdmin may lead to several XSS issues and
local and remote file inclusion vulnerabilities.

Background

phpMyAdmin is a tool written in PHP intended to handle the
administration of MySQL over the web.

Affected packages

     Package / Vulnerable / Unaffected

  1  dev-db/phpmyadmin     < 2.7.0_p1                      >= 2.7.0_p1

Description

Stefan Esser from Hardened-PHP reported about multiple
vulnerabilties found in phpMyAdmin. The $GLOBALS variable allows
modifying the global variable import_blacklist to open phpMyAdmin
to local and remote file inclusion, depending on your PHP version
(CVE-2005-4079, PMASA-2005-9). Furthermore, it is also possible to
conduct an XSS attack via the $HTTP_HOST variable and a local and
remote file inclusion because the contents of the variable are
under total control of the attacker (CVE-2005-3665,
PMASA-2005-8).

Impact

A remote attacker may exploit these vulnerabilities by sending
malicious requests, causing the execution of arbitrary code with
the rights of the user running the web server. The cross-site
scripting issues allow a remote attacker to inject and execute
malicious script code or to steal cookie-based authentication
credentials, potentially allowing unauthorized access to
phpMyAdmin.

Workaround

There is no known workaround at this time.

Resolution

All phpMyAdmin users should upgrade to the latest version:

    # emerge --sync
    # emerge --ask --oneshot --verbose ">=dev-db/phpmyadmin-2.7.0_p1"

Gentoo Linux Security Advisory GLSA 200512-04

http://security.gentoo.org/

Severity: Normal
Title: Openswan, IPsec-Tools: Vulnerabilities in ISAKMP Protocol
implementation
Date: December 12, 2005
Bugs: #112568, #113201
ID: 200512-04

Synopsis

Openswan and IPsec-Tools suffer from an implementation flaw
which may allow a Denial of Service attack.

Background

Openswan is an implementation of IPsec for Linux. IPsec-Tools is
a port of KAME’s implementation of the IPsec utilities, including
racoon, an Internet Key Exchange daemon. Internet Key Exchange
version 1 (IKEv1), a derivate of ISAKMP, is an important part of
IPsec. IPsec is widely used to secure exchange of packets at the IP
layer and mostly used to implement Virtual Private Networks
(VPNs).

Affected packages

     Package / Vulnerable / Unaffected

  1  net-misc/openswan              < 2.4.4                   >= 2.4.4
  2  net-firewall/ipsec-tools       < 0.6.3                   >= 0.6.3
                                                          *>= 0.6.2-r1
                                                            *>= 0.4-r2
    -------------------------------------------------------------------
2 affected packages on all of their supported architectures.

Description

The Oulu University Secure Programming Group (OUSPG) discovered
that various ISAKMP implementations, including Openswan and racoon
(included in the IPsec-Tools package), behave in an anomalous way
when they receive and handle ISAKMP Phase 1 packets with invalid or
abnormal contents.

Impact

A remote attacker can create a specially crafted packet using
3DES with an invalid key length, resulting in a Denial of Service
attack, format string vulnerabilities or buffer overflows.

Workaround

Avoid using “aggressive mode” in ISAKMP Phase 1, which exchanges
information between the sides before there is a secure channel.

Resolution

All Openswan users should upgrade to the latest version:

    # emerge --sync
    # emerge --ask --oneshot --verbose ">=net-misc/openswan-2.4.4"

All IPsec-Tools users should upgrade to the latest version:

    # emerge --sync
    # emerge --ask --oneshot --verbose net-firewall/ipsec-tools

Ubuntu Linux

Ubuntu Security Notice USN-222-2 December 12, 2005
perl vulnerability
CVE-2005-3962

A security issue affects the following Ubuntu releases:

Ubuntu 4.10 (Warty Warthog)
Ubuntu 5.04 (Hoary Hedgehog)
Ubuntu 5.10 (Breezy Badger)

The following packages are affected:

libperl5.8
perl-base

The problem can be corrected by upgrading the affected package
to version 5.8.4-2ubuntu0.6 (for Ubuntu 4.10), 5.8.4-6ubuntu1.2
(for Ubuntu 5.04), or 5.8.7-5ubuntu1.2 (for Ubuntu 5.10). In
general, a standard system upgrade is sufficient to effect the
necessary changes.

Details follow:

USN-222-1 fixed a vulnerability in the Perl interpreter. It was
discovered that the version of USN-222-1 was not sufficient to
handle all possible cases of malformed input that could lead to
arbitrary code execution, so another update is necessary.

Original advisory:

Jack Louis of Dyad Security discovered that Perl did not
sufficiently check the explicit length argument in format strings.
Specially crafted format strings with overly large length arguments
led to a crash of the Perl interpreter or even to execution of
arbitrary attacker-defined code with the privileges of the user
running the Perl program.

However, this attack was only possible in insecure Perl programs
which use variables with user-defined values in string
interpolations without checking their validity.

Updated packages for Ubuntu 4.10:
