The spread of Linux as a server Internet appliance OS in Asia
has prompted a group to ask that the Taiwanese government include
Linux in its procurement plans to stay competitive with China. If
things go as they’ve requested, the government would have Linux
deployed throughout 20% of its departments by 2004.
These players hope the government will support them by
establishing an official department specializing in creating an
entire Chinese-language OS environment and in clarifying the items
and resources eligible for Chinese-language integration and
standardization.Despite the continuing dominance of Microsoft’s Windows in the
OS market, Linux has become a popular OS for servers and various
emerging IA products. According to market statistics, there are
about eight million computers running on Linux-based OS worldwide,
with an annual growth of 25 percent in the Linux population on
average.
