“e-smith, inc., provider of the only open source communications
server for small enterprises, today announced that it received $3
million in financing from Greylock, a premiere venture capital
firm, and Red Hat Inc., pioneer in the Linux world. With over
10,000 users worldwide, e-smith will use this round of venture
funding to extend its reach in the small and mid-sized enterprise
(SME) marketplace. Introduced over a year ago, the e-smith server
and gateway synthesizes Red Hat Linux for small office
communications needs. Currently in its fourth version, e-smith has
a wide range of satisfied customers, for example, the law firm of
Gordon Freedman and Connecticut Hospice, both demanding different
aspects of e-smith’s dynamic server.”

“e-smith offers the best Linux-based solution for small office
networks,” says Red Hat Chairman and CEO, Robert Young.
e-smith is an excellent complement to Red Hat Linux, bringing
Red Hat Linux technology to the SME market by offering a simplified
application targeted at small business needs.

“The e-smith server and gateway is the easiest, most
cost-effective way for a small and growing business to connect to
the Internet. The e-smith server provides the network with
industrial security, and such services as email, file and print
sharing, and the Apache web server. A unique feature called I-bays
allows users instantly to create sites on their e-smith hard drive
serving as intranets, extranets, and customer download sites.
Installation of the software is 100% automatic, and a web based
user interface makes routine administration a breeze. Because the
e-smith server and gateway has been optimized for ease of use, it
brings the power and reliability of Red Hat Linux within reach of
SMEs.”
