Canada Computes: Linux users still vulnerable to snoops

In Linux, there is no system registry, so there is no easy
way for companies to track much information about you. The prospect
of software in Linux sending information without my knowledge,
while possible, hardly seemed worth worrying about. That is, until
recently.

“I don’t have Sendmail configured properly. It isn’t deliberate;
I just haven’t gotten around to setting it up to send mail to the
outside world yet. As a consequence, any mail sent, other than
local mail, doesn’t go anywhere.”

“I was logged in as root when the system told me I had new mail.
I have obviously not tried sending any mail via Sendmail because I
know damn well it doesn’t work. Imagine my surprise and annoyance
when I saw a message from stating it couldn’t deliver a message,
one was being sent without my consent. Sendmail helpfully quoted
the message back.”
