ComputerWorld: Lawyers inadvertently release DVD decryption code

“Lawyers for an entertainment industry trade group, which claims
that a program breaking the DVD Content Scrambling System violates
trade secrets, inadvertently made the program widely available as
part of its request for a preliminary injunction against Web site
operators who posted the software….”

The San Francisco-based Electronic Frontier Foundation
(EFF), which is supporting a defendant in the case, argues that the
DVD-CCA waived trade secret protection when it entered the
information into the public record. The DVD-CCA wasn’t available
for comment.

“In the meantime, some Web site operators not listed as
defendants in the case have been busy distributing copies of DeCSS
around the world since last October. More than 26,000 people have
downloaded DeCSS from one site alone at a rate of 600 per hour
since the program was posted there Jan. 22.”
