“…there are still concerns about Windows 2000. Its
upcoming launch may be the underlying reason for the Ballmer
promotion. It seems more and more apparent as test results slowly
come in that Windows 2000 might become a headache for the
company.
There are two stories on The Street that may emerge
in the weeks ahead. First, a well-known Wall Street Journal
columnist installed Windows 2000 on his system and it trashed his
computer. I don’t know the details, but it appears to have been an
attempt to upgrade an older machine. He made a fuss with Microsoft
over his problems and it’s possible that a negative review will
follow.

Word has gotten around and other daily news reporters, who were
designated by the company to review the product under
non-disclosure agreements, were contacted by the PR minions of
Microsoft. One writer for a major New York daily was warned not to
upgrade and Microsoft suggested to him that they provide him with a
complete machine with Windows 2000 pre-loaded by the company. It is
becoming more and more apparent that upgrading to Windows 2000 is
not to be taken lightly.”

“To confuse matters more Microsoft seems intent on producing two
new operating systems, including something called Windows ME
(Millennium Edition), which is the real upgrade to Windows 98 for
those users of older clunkers and game players worried about
compatibility. To me, this indicates the company is concerned about
something in regards to Windows2000. Why release another upgrade to
Windows98 on the side if Windows2000 is perfect?”
