“Mirapoint Inc. last week released enhanced software for its
messaging “appliance,” a device that’s beginning to win devotees
among some businesses. Cisco Systems and 3Com Corp. have started
using Mirapoint’s messaging appliance within their internal IT
infrastructures.

“The software lets Mirapoint’s application-specific messaging
server support the Secure Sockets Layer encryption protocol,
Kerberos security, and the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol.
It can also support as many as 150,000 users on a single
device.

“Mirapoint is aiming its product at companies that use Unix
servers running SendMail freeware to transfer mail from one
messaging platform to another, as well as to send E-mail to the
Internet. Cisco is testing Mirapoint servers as a replacement for
Unix servers.”
