IT-Analysis: SGI unloads the baggage to focus on Linux

“Despite claims to the contrary for the past few months,
claiming that it really wanted someone to just buy into the firm,
SGI look set to unload the financial burden that is Cray onto a
company called Gores Technology Group.”

“Although the reports of the sale are as yet unconfirmed, it
would appear that this is now the close of the Cray chapter in
SGI’s history, which is a shame because it was once a truly
revolutionary firm. The dawn of its days at SGI began not long ago
when SGI in general hit troubled waters. Then CEO, Richard
Belluzzo, who has since been replaced, announced that Cray was
going to be spun off in August of this year, and since then the
company has done very little – apart from scooping a major contract
with the US National Security Agency.”

This gives SGI a chance to concentrate on more lucrative
areas, like Linux, as it sets about rebuilding itself
