[ Note: Sun’s OS studied was Solaris 7, not the current
Solaris 8 – LT ed. ]

“The [D.H. Brown] study broke down the functions into a number
of core performance areas most notably these were scalability,
reliability and availability, systems management, internet and web
application services, and directory and security services. Of these
five areas AIX 4.3.3 managed to claim the overall top ranking
thanks in part to its excellence in the areas of Internet and web
application services – which must cast a shadow over Sun’s dot com
claims.”

“As for the rest of the areas studied AIX failed to
come top in any of them but still managed to pull through with
second place in directory and security services and systems
management. The real let down for the IBM camp however was the
reliability, serviceability and availability where it rated the
worst out of the five OSs tested. This however would appear to put
AIX in a difficult situation. It excels in the Internet and web
application services functionality but fails quite miserably in the
reliability and availability measures, which must make it a
difficult choice for the Internet space.”

“Solaris however stormed to the top of the charts in terms of
scalability but only managed a disappointing fourth in the Internet
and web application functionality, the systems management and the
directory and security functionality measures – putting it in
fourth place overall behind AIX, HP-UX and Tru64.”
