“Linux users just sat back last week and watched the nickelodeon
as users of Outlook struggled to stamp out this insidious VBScript
that showed up on their computers. I use Outlook on one of my
machines and I dutifully grabbed the virus definition file and
loaded it into my anti-virus software back on Bug Day. To my
relief, no instance of the virus or its clones showed up in my
Inbox. Upon some further reflection, I was a bit depressed about
this fact. Like Charlie Brown, I guess I wasn’t on anybody’s
mailing list.”

“My personal experiences aside, a lot of people on Windows PCs
got hit with this virus, and it was a pain in the ass for quite a
few days. Hard core Linux users proclaimed once again the
superiority of Linux because their operating system could not be
touched by this bug. In this case, they have a valid point. Let’s
face it, how innovative can Microsoft be if it leaves a security
hole this big in its flagship e-mail program?”

“But, despite common belief, Linux is by no means impervious to
attack. Sure, these e-mail attacks pretty much bounce off a
Linux box like bullets off of Superman’s chest. But even Superman
can get whacked by kryptonite if he’s not careful. And the
kryptonite for Linux is the powerful nature of the operating system
itself.
