decided I can wait no longer. I’m determined to install a new Linux
distribution version, but my conscience tells me to keep some
backups. What can I do in order to preserve my current setup in
case anything goes wrong?…”

Occasionally, I find a lost+found directory in various places
in my file system. Each of these directories is always empty, but
shows a size that I’d expect from a file. Any clue how they got
there? Are they wasting my disk space or not?…
