An anonymous reader writes:
In response to the Brian K. West story originally
carried on LinuxFreak.org, Sheldon Sperling (of the DOJ) wrote a
news release.
West’s legal defense has its own reply
to the situation.
Editor’s Note: West is facing charges of wire fraud in
connection with accusations that he illegally accessed the records
and software of a local newspaper. West says he stumbled across a
glaring vulnerability in the paper’s security and was merely trying
to help out. The paper says more happened than that.
These links are being provided because they were passed along to
us, but having read the original item, plus reader reaction to it,
and having read over several of the documents involved in this
case, we’d be remiss if we didn’t note that this story is being
posted as a followup. As with most stories, there’s more than one
side to this one, and it may be that Mr. West’s case isn’t as
clear-cut as some would represent it to be.
The original item, we’d also like to point out, strained
topicality for a site devoted to Linux coverage, and this is a
story we’ll be unlikely to follow in any great detail in the
future.
