“Conectiva is participating in the development of the XFree86
project. It relates to an implementation of the X Window System for
the operating systems based on UNIX, such as Linux, FreeBSD, among
others. It is focused on the Intel i386 platform, also supporting
systems with Alpha or Sparc processors, and is now in its 4.0
version, allowing the user to work with two or more monitors in one
single desktop, including the movement of windows from one monitor
to the other. Conectiva has participated in this project by
collaborating in the development & maintenance of various
libraries and programs, the correction of problems and improvement
of functioning, this way making the interface easier to use.

Also being developed by Conectiva, the graphic configuration
program XFree86 4.0, which allows for the user to make various
configurations quickly and easily. Using only the mouse and
keyboard, it is possible to move images from monitors to manage the
physical layout of a system with two or more monitors, adding or
removing command lines in the speed that images on the monitor are
re-designed, configure devices, among others.”

“Being tested and incorporated to the work as well, is the DRI-
Direct Rendering Infrastructure, with the objective of accelerating
the interface with the graphic boards through the inclusion of a
driver inside the kernel, increasing by consequence the speed of
image construction.”

“This is the first implementation of this sort developed as an
open-source project, and, due to the possibility of a bigger
desktop, allows various applications, among others, image and text
editing to be executed simultaneously using several monitors. Also
possesses an extension for support to video presentation, which can
be used, among others, as a security video monitoring center, in
buildings or shopping-malls.”
